Amoxil (Amoxicillin) is a drug that belongs to the group of antibiotics and is readily prescribed by doctors to treat certain bacterial infections. It is just like penicillin that stops the growth of bacteria and not kills them. Amoxicillin belongs to Penicillin group of antibiotics that also includes ticarcillin, piperacillin, and ampicillin. It is available in the market as Amoxil, Amodex, Clamoxyl, Bactox. In bacterial infections, it is seen that bacteria make walls that surround them and then use these walls to survive and multiply. But when Amoxil is taken, it works to stop bacteria from making these walls that stops the growth of bacteria. Other infrequent uses include prescribing this drug to prevent recurrence of duodenal ulcer after it has been operated upon in gastrointestinal tract or to giver it to a patient who has just undergone a surgery to prevent an infection from taking place. Common bacteria against which Amoxicillin has been used and found to be very effective are Streptococci, Pneumococci, N. gonorrhea, E. coli, etc.
One thing that is common with all antibiotics is to complete the course for the duration for which it has been prescribed by the doctor even if the patient feels he has got better or has been cured. This is important as completing the course prevents recurrence of disease and improves the immunity of the patient.
Amoxil has been known to hamper with the activity of a birth control pill. It seems to make them less effective. Ask your doctor another birth control method to be on the safe side if you have been prescribed Amoxil to treat your bacterial infection.
Amoxil is considered to be a safe medication and it can be given to even pregnant ladies who have no allergy to penicillin group of antibiotics. However, this drug is shown up in the milk of nursing mothers and causes diarrhea and other allergic responses in infants. Still, it can be given to treat bacterial infections in infants.
