Trimethoprim + Sulfamethoxazole is a combination antibiotic as it contains two powerful antibiotics that work to inhibit the production of folic acid in bacteria, thereby suppressing their growth. Trimethoprim + Sulfamethoxazole is a combination that does not allow fro making of folic acid that is necessary for synthesis of proteins and DNA for bacteria. This inhibition of making of folic acid does not harm the patient as he can obtain it from his diet. On the other hand, non availability of folic acid is detrimental for bacteria as it cannot survive in the absence of folic acid.
Bactrim is the brand name of a drug that contains two powerful antibiotics called Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole and works like an antibiotic on many bacterial infections such as ear infect ion, lung infection, bronchitis, urinary tract infection, pneumonia, and so on. Bactrim can also be indicated in some other medical conditions in addition to these conditions. It is prescribed to prevent on particular infection called Pneumocystis carinii. It has to be kept in mind that Trimethoprim + Sulfamethoxazole is not to be used for viral infections as it is not effective in treating them.
Trimethoprim + Sulfamethoxazole is a deadly combination that does not allow the bacteria to develop immunity against the antibiotic. Any patient having any deficiency of lever or kidney should tell about his condition beforehand to his doctor. Malnourished people, patients having AIDS, and patients having asthma should not be prescribed this drug. Trimethoprim + Sulfamethoxazole being an antibiotic, patients should complete the full course and should not stop taking the drug even if they feel they have become better. One should not take Trimethoprim + Sulfamethoxazole without prescription of the doctor, and is not given to breast feeding mothers and expecting ladies. You are not a candidate for this drug if you are anemic because of lack of folic acid.
